The Lead Sports - Shut down the wrong corner... Shut down the wrong corner...

Former Celtics big man Glen Davis once again proved why he deserves his long-standing "Big Baby" moniker, emerging from the fringes of irrelevancy to throw shade on his former coach Doc Rivers. While speaking on Chris Broussard's podcast, Baby said Rivers was "lucky as hell" to win a championship with the 2008 Celtics and that [...]

The Lead Sports - A Slave-Owner Mentality A Slave-Owner Mentality

It may not be official yet, but were calling it anyway: Bayern Munich has become the first team to qualify for the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Walloping a truly pathetic Arsenal squad 5-1 at home (again), Thiago Alcantara and his dunkel-quaffing, lederhosen-clad teammates all but locked up their advancement to the next round, pending the formality of [...]

The Lead Sports - Rumor Has It... Rumor Has It...

On the day the Cavs announced that Kevin Love would miss six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, LeBron and Company marched into Minny and pulled out a 116-108 win against Andrew Wiggins (41 points, zero turnovers) and the Timberwolves. Wiggins always brings his A-game against the team that traded him away [...]

The Lead Sports - Girls? Or Grown-Ass Women? Girls? Or Grown-Ass Women?

Jeffrey Sandusky, one of Jerry's six adopted children, was arrested for sexually assaulting a child, among other charges. We could make a joke about Joe Paterno's kid already denying having any knowledge of the assault, but unfortunately this is the least funny, most disturbing story to pervade the sports world in the past decade, maybe [...]

Have you heard about this thing called "finance"? A few months ago, we didn't know jack about the business world, but after signing up for Finimize the new daily finance email sophisticated enough for Wall Street but understandable for everyone else we're fully abreast of everything going on in the world of commerce. The Lead Sports - Waiting for the balls to drop... Waiting for the balls to drop...

In a desperate attempt to inject some life into Pro Bowl week, an occasion that has been consistently duller than C-SPAN telecasts, the NFL revamped the annual skills competition. We were initially skeptical the event would produce anything resembling entertainment value, but some of the results actually held our interest. For instance, the Drone Drop, in [...]

The Lead Sports - Oscar's Predilections Oscar's Predilections

Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, who in his prime was such a lord of the ring that he had a stalker named Gollum, was arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with a DUI after failing a field sobriety test. This is not Oscar's first run-in with the alcohol demon, as he checked into rehab in [...]

The Lead Sports - Is Dabbing still cool? Is Dabbing still cool?

In a statement so homerish it made Dan Castellaneta proud, Dabo Swinney proclaimed that his former QB Deshaun Watson is the best player in the draft, and "if they pass on Deshaun, they're passing on Michael Jordan." Somewhere a laughing Jordan memed himself with a crying one (#meta). It's all good to believe in your guy, [...]

The Lead Sports - I'm drunk. I'm stupid. I'm drunk. I'm stupid.

In the wee hours on Sunday morning, a drunk Pats fan dared a drunker Pats fan to pull the fire alarm at the Steelers' hotel. The future Barstool Sports employee obliged, explaining to the Boston police afterward: "I'm drunk. I'm stupid." We would have preferred, "heroes get remembered, but legends never die," but I guess we'll settle [...]

The Lead Sports - You're not invincible... You're not invincible...

Two separate driving tragedies in the Dominican Republic took the lives of Royals star Yordano Ventura, 25, and journeyman Andy Marte, 33. Coming on the heels of Jose Fernandez's devastating passing in September, Ventura's death hit the baseball world hard, especially the game's large Dominican contingency. We have no idea whether alcohol was involved in [...]

Slapshot Old Time Hockey - The Arena Garden of Toronto. The Arena Garden of Toronto.

Hello Again, whilst researching for a book i am writing i came across this little article in a Winnipeg newspaper from 6/12/1912 it reads: RINK OPENING IN TORONTO DELAYED.
An ice making expert W.J. McGee arrived from New York Monday and after a thorough examination declared that the piping at the Arena would all have to be taken up and relaid.
This meant that the ice already formed would have to be thawed out and hot water was forced through the TWELVE MILES of pipe with that end in view. The pipes will have to taken up and relaid properly.
This will delay the skating and hockey practices for another week at least.

Above: The Arena.
Right: This is the programme from the final game at the Arena Gardens in 1930 Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Maroons.

Slapshot Old Time Hockey - The Hockey Sweater Logo. The Hockey Sweater Logo.

My love of hockey started many moons ago, I suppose my brother David is to blame, he used to take me to watch football first and Sunderland were our team, after the game we headed back into town to the leisure centre and watch some Ice-hockey.
The home team were the Crowtree Chiefs and one of my first games were against the Billingham Bombers it was a local derby and quite a feisty game I remember. Although I seemed to enjoy watching the Chiefs I definitely saw a big difference in quality when we visited our other local team the Durham Wasps (O`Conner, Brebant, Smith`s, Crapper etc....).
The best matchups had to be against the Whitley Warriors many a time we went to see a fight and a hockey game broke out. These were memorable times and i loved travelling around the country visiting other rinks. But my love for the game cranked up a gear when Channel 5 started televising live NHL games. I was in total awe of what I was seeing, so began my fascination for this breath taking sport. I had to find out more about all of the different uniforms, logos and nicknames.
I have read masses of books and magazines and will not be getting involved in where it began or who started this game. I am interested in the hockey logo and what it represents to the fans that follow it, hence the blog. I wanted to show people the interesting logos and try to find out about other ones that could end up lost through time.
Hopefully with my readers help I can gather enough information to fill a book perhaps. I know through my research their are some great works out their already ( SIHR Sweater museum, and logo database). I want to find out about the grass roots of hockey the amateur leagues [...]
